A few of the comments that have been shared:

"I was there with six other golfers in late September, and we used the Lodge as our base for five days, playing golf in and around Traverse City. Staying there was one of the best parts of our trip, and the trip was one of, if not the best we've ever had. First, Hilltop Log Lodge is spectacular. Everything about it is understated luxury, and it accomodated us so well had we known better we would have scheduled the whole week right there just so that we could stay in the Lodge. Richard and Jeff, who had a construction company that built the Lodge and other large log homes throughout the country, where most gracious. They met us when we arrived, showed us the place, and told us everything we needed to know about it. They were most pleasant and considerate and told us some of the places to go (wine tastings), places to eat, etc. You'll find them very easy to work with, and the return of the deposit was never in doubt and came very quickly. The place was spotless when we arrived, and everything worked perfectly.

I've told my family that the lodge and that area would be a great place for a family vacation. The bay is just a walk away, the golf is wonderful, and there are lots of outdoor things other than golf. It takes about 15 minutes to get into the main part of Traverse City, but you won't want to leave the Lodge to go there. The morning and evening views of the bay from the back deck are spectacular, and drinks and cigars there were great for us golfers! My wife is in a hiking group, and I suggested that they would really enjoy staying there and hiking that part of the country. The cost, for group accomodations, is very reasonable, and considering how comfortable it was, it was a great bargain. We would have spent much more staying in a relatively inexpensive hotel and we would not have been as comfortable. One of our best meals was right there when we grilled steaks, and we couldn't done that in a hotel. We are thinking about our next trip in 2010, and the lodge/Traverse City is right at the top of our list. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Go and enjoy!"

Our visit to Traverse City and your home was simply spectacular!  On behalf of the entire family, thank you for allowing us to stay at Hilltop.  It was amazing to take the tour with you and note; both the pride you take in it and how gracious you were in encouraging us to make ourselves at home.  As the rest of the family arrived it was just fantastic to see the looks on their faces as they walked through.  Mom and Dad really enjoyed the flowers too, and offer their thanks for helping with that.  Dad was really intrigued by the construction and how it all came together, if you have more to share on forming the beams, setting them, etc., we’d be grateful for that.

The weather co-operated nicely the remainder of the week to allow for some great views of the bay and see the mist fade as the day progressed.  The winery recommendations were spot on as was the dinner recommendation to Amical, it was a great meal.

Jeni and I talked quite a bit on the ride home about when we could get back to TC and spend it at Hilltop with other friends.

Thank you again, Marc and Jeni

As splendid as the log cabin construction is;  as well laid out the array of three levels, the many bedrooms, the bathrooms, the well-equipped kitchn may be;  as fundamentally furnished as the gamerooom is, with its full-sized pool table, card table and ping-pong table; as splendid as the views are from the mid-level deck, overlooking an expansive and tree-lined Grand Traverse Bay, replete with all its variegated blues, blue-greens, silvers, and off-whites;  as conveniently situated between Traverse City to the south and Suttons Bay, Leland, and the other bustling tourist villages to the north; the essential element here which I’ll try to explain on behalf of my family, remains the elegantly decorated interior of the dwelling…whose old, but well-restored and kept up, wooden furniture, iron lamps, and teak-wood table on the mid-level deck, served us for seven days in as private, gracious, and comfortable fashion as any traveler anywhere could hardly ever expect to experience.

Our hats are tipped to the owners, designers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and other tradespeople who brought this structure from the conceptual to the actual.  Having organized these family reunions at four-year intervals since 1990, we salute your expertise and insights;  and consider ourselves privileged to have benefitted from your labors.  In summary, the ‘Log Cabin Inn’ along the bay in the upper Midwest of the USA, has to be considered the non plus ultra of the family reunion experiences.

Thank you so very much, Peter

Day 1

It is our 10th year wedding anniversary and coming here was my surprise! We arrived @ 5:30 pm. Between Jeff’s warm hospitality and the beauty of the house, I was overwhelmed with a sense of peace. We were served hor d’ouevres on the lawn overlooking the view, and a 50 course meal (slight exaggeration only!) by candlelight by the big picture window. I took a bath in the clawfoot tub and remembered what it was like to relax...there are flowers everywhere!

Day 2

Shower outside - FUN! Cooked breakfast & ate out on the deck. Carlos the pooch from next door came to visit. Went to Farmer’s Market in town (great!) and then to Organic Grocery Oryana (ditto great!) Bought salmon & prosciutto @ Burritts...sampled the dipping oils. Shopped downtown for hours. Ate lunch at cool cafe - tea & salads. spent 2 hours at Higher Self Bookstore. Husband nearly passed out from incense...bought bath salts for claw foot tub later on... : ). Cooked amazing meal to the best medley of music imaginable... Went for walk down to the garden & water at the end of the dock. Such a beautiful evening! We drank wine on the grass, read every “Architectural Digest” (not possible) and slept like we have not in years.... We have been at peace here.

Day 3

We are on our way out. I cannot express my gratitude to Jeff & Richard for allowing just the two of us to enjoy this oasis of tranquility. We have recharged our batteries and are ready to go back to taking care of our community & loving our family and each other. We have traveled the world and stayed in some amazing places - Hilltop Log Lodge ranks up there with the best! We will come back - meanwhile call if you are ever in Grand Rapids & you can meet the kids! : ) Robin P. PS : Thank you so very much for helping me pull off this surprise for Robin!! :) Allowing us to enjoy your home and Jeff’s perfect hospitality and cooking...what a perfect way to enjoy our anniversary. We hope to get to come back for years..... : )

Thanks again for all you’ve done, Jaret

We had a delightful time staying in your “cabin in the sky.”

The view is forever in my heart. When I wish to recreate the peaceful feeling that I feel looking out, I will simply pull it from the place I have stored it in my heart and I will once more be transported back to your magical place.

Wishing you joy, happiness and love - always love! Francesca

We chose our place to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with care - and Hilltop Log Lodge went beyond our expectations! This was a fantastic place with room for all of us - but we seemed to gravitate everyday and all day long to the balcony off the kitchen. We had great weather everyday and enjoyed our breakfasts, lunch and dinners out on the balcony. We watched the moon come up each night - gold, orange, red. The granddaughters had a wonderful time in the game room - especially with the ping pong. We explored the area and Suttons Bay was delightful - but coming back here was always a source of relaxation and peacefulness.

Our thanks to Connie for a delicious anniversary dinner on Wed. night, and to you, Jeff and Richard, for this opportunity this once in a lifetime opportunity to live like royalty.

Best Regards, Betty (from Madison Wisconsin)

The weekend here was a lot of fun for all of us. The accommodations were 1st class all the way, the lodge is gorgeous, spacious yet cozy at the same time. Nothing can beat the sunrise with coffee on the deck in the morning. And the full moon our 1st night reflecting off the water was heaven sent. We had the pleasure of having Connie cook for us and we couldn’t have had a nicer time. The surround sound system was the best.

Truly a lovely experience, Jeff and Deb

We were just so happy to be there……. we are just in awe at your creation – absolutely stunning. The best way I could describe it is that I've never stayed in a vacation home so luxurious but yet still felt like home. Oh, and the bed my mom and I slept in- it was SO comfortable - which was especially pleasant given I have not had the chance to sleep in for 2.5 years (the age of my daughter!)

Thanks again for your hospitality and sharing the Hilltop Lodge with our group, We're in love!

Take care, Jacquie

We loved the lodge. My husband and sons read all the books about log homes and the “history of the hilltop lodge”. The gathering area in the hearth room/kitchen did get rather warm with the unseasonable Michigan weather but the air conditioning in the sleeping areas was helpful for a good night’s sleep. I must say, I’ve never stayed in a rental home, that is so abundantly furnished... from the kitchen cookward, to the abundance of towels in the bathrooms, and the new Electrolux washing machine and dryer in the laundry room. We even tried our hand @ recycling in the convenient assigned bins... The Hilltop was a perfect home away for my children, daughters in law, and grandchildren.

Thank you for providing such a wonderful experience! Mara Beth D. W.

Hope you are relaxing on this beautiful, crisp Labor Day. The temperature here is 65 - reminiscent of our beautiful mornings at the Log Lodge! We are not as relaxed and/or happy to be back to real life in Chicago - work? What is that about?!! No lake view from our kitchen sink or laundry room! That is my life once again cooking & cleaning with no trips to wineries, Van’s beach, or walks to the boat launch with the hounds!! We hope the economy in Leelanau County experienced a surge that week - our family loves to shop! We are all developing our pictures and hope you don’t find it too odd if we send a few your way. We have such fond memories of our trip and really want to return again one day. I will absolutely poll our family regarding our favorites and let you know our input for your lists. Everything you both suggested was just stellar! And the people - residents/ shop owners/ restaurant staff - were all so friendly and helpful. You two are quite special people - even though I didn’t get the pleasure of meeting you, I know you truly are! What you created in the Hilltop Log Lodge is extraordinary - it provided a memorable family experience, for our girls with their grandparents, for all of us really. Very special indeed!!! If you are ever in Chicago, why would you ever leave Michigan?, please call us - we’d love to see you!!

Very fondly, Cheryl & Jim

As I read all that has been written in your guest book, I feel as if this home has made many memories. I know that our family will never forget the love and joy we felt as our two precious children said their marriage vows here. The ceremony was held in the lovely back lawn with the beauty of the bay behind them. Our families gathered around them as God blessed their marriage with a beautiful fall day…and the view-oh my goodness, the VIEW!!!!

Your home is truly a one of a kind and amazing. We relaxed and had a week-long celebration. It is time that we will never forget.

Thank you so much for everything,

Lisa and Jim, September 2014

We have enjoyed our stay at your Hilltop Lodge the past week …SO SO much! With friends and family from all over we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in great style. The chef, Julia, was a rare and awesome find. We would recommend her…and your home to anyone looking for a luxury, Up North stay.

We have been to many locations, from Hawaii to Mexico, in luxury hotels, and your beautiful home is among the very best we’ve ever enjoyed staying at. We hope to return in the years to come with our children, grandchildren and more friends.
